Inches to Centimetres: Sizes That Actually Matter

5 min read · Updated October 2026

One inch is 2.54 centimetres — defined exactly, since 1959, by international agreement. No rounding debates, no national variants: it's the cleanest conversion in daily life. What trips people up isn't the factor, it's knowing which measurements are inch-based and why.

Quick mental method

×2.5, then add 1.6% — or simpler: ×2.5 and add a pinch. 32 inches → 32×2.5 = 80 → +1.3 ≈ 81.3 cm (exact: 81.28). For heights and screen sizes, the ×2.5 alone is usually close enough (80 vs 81.3 — you'd never notice).

TV and monitor sizes: the diagonal trap

A "55-inch TV" measures 140 cm diagonally — not width. People buy a 55" TV for a 120 cm shelf and discover it doesn't fit. Width of a 16:9 screen ≈ diagonal × 0.872:

  • 43" → ~96 cm wide, 55" → ~123 cm, 65" → ~145 cm, 75" → ~167 cm

Measure the shelf (width), not the diagonal. Height adds ~0.49×diagonal plus a few cm of bezel and stand.

Laptops, phones, tablets

Screens use diagonal inches too: a 13" laptop is a 33 cm diagonal — a screen about 29 × 16 cm. A 6.1" phone display is ~15.5 cm diagonal. When a case or sleeve lists "fits 13 inch", it means diagonal class, not physical width — check the actual outer dimensions in cm on the spec sheet.

Clothing: inches are the industry standard

Men's trousers (waist), shirt collars, and jeans are sized in inches worldwide — a W32/L32 jean is a 32-inch (81 cm) waist. US sizing runs the same inches as UK/EU raw measurements. The trap is vanity sizing: a modern W32 fits larger than a 1980s W32, because standards drifted. The tape measure doesn't lie; the label might.

Pipes, tools and hardware

Plumbing and hardware still speak inches even in metric countries: a "½-inch pipe" doesn't measure 1.27 cm inside — pipe sizes are nominal, inherited from old standards. A ½" NPT pipe's actual outer diameter is about 2.1 cm. Rule: for tools and fittings, buy by the stated nominal size, never by measured size.

Human height, the friendly way

US people quote height in feet-inches: 5'9" = 5×30.48 + 9×2.54 = 175.3 cm. Anchors: 5'0" = 152 cm, 5'6" = 168 cm, 6'0" = 183 cm. In reverse, cm→feet: divide by 30.48; the remainder ×12 gives inches. 170 cm = 5'7" (167.6 + rounding).

The table worth bookmarking

  • 1" = 2.54 cm · 6" = 15.2 cm · 12" (1 ft) = 30.5 cm
  • 24" = 61 cm · 32" = 81 cm · 55" = 140 cm · 65" = 165 cm
